Van 16 september tot 5 november 2023 vindt de expositie As long as it lasts van Luuk Smits plaats bij Greylight Projects. Voor de totstandkoming van deze expositie ging kunstenaar Luuk Smits op pad in en rondom de zandgroeve van Heerlen. Vanuit een langer bestaande interesse in groeves en bouwplaatsen wereldwijd, dook Smits in op welke (onzichtbare) processen er op een plek als deze plaatsvinden.
Als onderdeel van dit onderzoek, werd Smits ondersteund door schrijver en curator Roy Voragen met de productie van een tekst: Strategize sand & etc. Dit werk werd een samenstelling van twee soorten teksten die bijna elkaars tegenovergestelde zijn, ondanks dat zij hetzelfde onderwerp hebben. Het Engelse gedeelte uit Strategize sand & etc zijn directe citaten van de website van zandexploitatiebedrijf Sibelco, welke een van de fabrieken in de Heerlense zandgroeve beheerd. Het Nederlandse gedeelte van de tekst is gekopieerd van de informatieborden die rondom de groeve te vinden zijn, welke dienen om bezoekers te informeren over het gebied.
Opmerkelijk is het contrast tussen het beeld dat de Engelse en Nederlandse tekst schept. Sibelco geeft in het Engels een concreet beeld op het bedrijfsproces, dat draait om cijfers en winst. Trots verkondigen zij de groei van hun kapitaal via het uitgraven van het landschap. De Nederlandse tekst van de informatieborden geeft daarentegen een kijk op het gebied dat onderdeel uitmaakt van de totale geschiedenis van de mijnstreek, welke soms ook bijna geromantiseerd werd.
De tekst werd door Lizzie Veldkamp en Famke Storms voorgedragen op 14 oktober tijdens de TALK & WALK die werd begeleid door Luuk Smits. Op verschillende locaties rondom de zandgroeve in Heerlen werd de tekst in delen voorgelezen aan het deelnemende publiek.

(EN) From September 16 to November 5, 2023, the exhibition As long as it lasts by Luuk Smits will take place at Greylight Projects. For the realization of this exhibition, artist Luuk Smits set out in and around the sand quarry of Heerlen. Starting from a long-standing interest in quarries and construction sites worldwide, Smits delved into what (invisible) processes take place in a place like this.
As part of this research, Smits was supported by writer and curator Roy Voragen with the production of a text: Strategize sand & etc. This work became a composite of two types of texts that are almost opposites, despite having the same subject matter. The English part from Strategize sand & etc are direct quotes from the website of sand exploitation company Sibelco, which manages one of the plants in the Heerlen sand quarry. The Dutch part of the text is copied from the information boards found around the quarry, which serve to inform visitors about the area.
The contrast between the image created by the English and Dutch texts is remarkable. In English, Sibelco paints a concrete picture on the business process, which revolves around numbers and profits. Proudly they proclaim the growth of their capital through the excavation of the landscape. In contrast, the Dutch text of the information boards gives a view of the area that is part of the overall history of the mining region, which at times was also almost romanticized.
The text was recited by Lizzie Veldkamp and Famke Storms on Oct. 14 during the TALK & WALK accompanied by Luuk Smits. At various locations around the sand pit in Heerlen, the text was read in parts to the participating audience.
