(NL) Dit voorjaar, van mei tot juni, organiseert Greylight Projects weer twee residenties. Ali Glover en Carole Louis zijn beide geselecteerd voor de performing landscapes residenties. Aan het einde van hun residentie maken ze deel uit van het performing landscapes festival op 7 september in Luik. Zowel Ali als Carole stellen zichzelf voor:
Ali Glover (West Midlands, 1993) is een kunstenaar uit Londen. Hij studeerde in 2015 af aan het Chelsea College of Art en voltooide in 2022 het MFA Fine Art-programma aan Goldsmiths. Glovers interventies op locatie onderzoeken hoe architecturale infrastructuren aspecten van gedrag en psychologische patronen kunnen verschuiven. Hij is geïnteresseerd in hoe vormen van taal (architectonisch, beeld of sonisch) die gebruikt worden in die tussenmomenten ertoe kunnen leiden dat iets van over het hoofd gezien tot zichtbaar wordt. Glover onderzoekt noties van achtervolging binnen stedelijke omgevingen, wat hem ertoe bracht om monotone en cyclische elementen van tijd in zijn praktijk en onderzoek te overwegen.
Glover leent momenten van andere vormen binnen zijn interventies die het mogelijk maken markeringen in de tijd aan te brengen om ze tegelijkertijd te laten instorten. De politiek van het dagdromen wordt verwoord door middel van veldopnames die gebieden van productiviteit en verveling in vraag stellen. In combinatie met de structurele installatie zoekt Glover naar aspecten van de galerieruimte waarin hij exposeert en combineert ze op poëtische wijze, als commentaar op constitutionele aspecten van de mentale ruimte van een individu en maatschappelijke verwachtingen over uniformiteit.

Carole Louis (1985 Keulen, Duitsland) woont en werkt in Brussel. Ze studeerde beeldhouwkunst aan de school voor beeldende kunsten “La Cambre” en behaalde haar masterdiploma in 2008. Ze speelt in haar werk met het absurde en het misverstand en vindt in haar praktijk een tragikomische wereld uit die voortdurend de verhoudingen van macht, klasse en economie in vraag stelt. Haar projecten gaan regelmatig in tegen de ketenen die op alle niveaus worden opgelegd. De kunstenares zaait twijfel in ons hoofd en heeft er plezier in om contrapunten te distilleren uit situaties die ons vastberaden lijken, soms ondanks onszelf.
Louis’ tragikomische universum heeft als doel de soliditeit van bevestigende functies te ontleden, waarvan het onbetwistbare bewijs bijdraagt aan hun onzichtbaarheid. Door de letterlijkheid van bepaalde fenomenen te overdrijven of door uit te gaan van een geniaal standpunt, laat ze zien hoe elk ideaal van oplossing onvermijdelijk synoniem is met paradoxen en beperkingen. In haar artistieke praktijk combineert ze verschillende media om een globale context te produceren, die vaak geactiveerd wordt door middel van performances.

(EN) This spring, from May until June, Greylight Projects hosts another two residencies. Ali Glover and Carole Louis are both artists selected for the performing landscapes residencies. At the end of the residency, they will be part of the performing landscapes festival on the 7th of September in Liege. Both Ali and Carole introduce themselves:
Ali Glover (1993 West Midlands) is a Londen-based artist. He graduated from Chelsea College of Art in 2015 and completed the MFA Fine Art program at Goldsmiths in 2022. Glover’s site-based interventions consider how architectural infrastructures can shift aspects of behavior and psychological patterns. He is interested in how forms of language (architectural, image, or sonic) used in those in-between moments can lead to something from being overlooked to visible. Glover explores notions of haunting within urban environments, this brought him to consider monotonous and cyclical elements of time in his practice and research.
Glover borrows moments of other forms within his interventions that allow markers in time to be made to collapse them simultaneously. The politics of daydreaming are articulated through field recordings questioning areas of productivity and boredom. Combined with the structural installation, Glover looks to reference aspects of the gallery space in which he is exhibiting, combining them poetically, as a commentary on constitutional aspects of an individual’s mental space and societal expectations on uniformity.

Carole Louis (1985 Köln, Germany) is an artist based in Brussels. She studied sculpture at the visual arts school “La Cambre” and completed her masters degree in 2008. She plays in her work on the absurd and the misunderstanding and reinvents in her practice a tragicomic world that constantly questions the relations of power, class, and economy. Her projects regularly run counter to the shackles imposed at all levels. The artist casts doubt in our minds and has fun distilling counterpoints to situations that seem determined to us, sometimes despite ourselves.
Louis’ tragicomic universe aims to dissect the solidity of affirmative functions, whose indisputable evidence contributes to their invisibility. By exaggerating the literal of certain phenomena, or starting from an ingenuous point of view, she shows how any ideal of resolution is inevitably synonymous with paradoxes and constraints. In her artistic practice, she combines different media to produce a global context, which are often activated through performance.
