Greylight Projects (Heerlen) invites multidisciplinary visual artists and artistic researchers from the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany to apply for a 3-month residency (1 Sept – 31 Nov 2026) as part of the Borderland Residencies program.
The programme supports research-based and process-driven practices engaging with space, time, and environment. Departing from Robert Smithson’s Heerlen Soil and Mirrors (1969) and the legacy of Op Losse Schroeven: Situaties en Cryptostructuren, artists are invited to approach public and exhibition spaces as sites for research, observation, and intervention.
While these historical references form an important point of departure for the residency, proposals do not need to engage directly with Smithson’s work or the exhibition itself. Rather, the residency seeks to explore the modes of thinking, artistic strategies, and intentions that underpinned these histories — from process, instruction, and experimentation to the investigation of visible and invisible structures — as a basis for developing new artistic inquiries today.
We welcome proposals working through mapping, walking, protocols, text, sound, installation, performance, or publication—especially those that engage with hidden structures, systems, and contemporary conditions.
Today, the question is no longer whether art can operate through process, instruction, research, or intervention — these approaches have become familiar within contemporary practice. Rather, this residency asks what such methods can reveal today. What hidden structures, social conditions, ecological transformations, or technological systems call for renewed forms of observation, reflection, and intervention? How might artistic research help us understand and imagine our relationship to these changing realities?
The residency offers:
- 3-month working period (Sep–Nov 2026)
- €1000 per month + €500 production budget
- Studio/living space in Heerlen
- Participation in Borderland Residencies (field trips, studio visits, meetings)
- Open studio presentation at the end of the residency

Greylight Projects (Heerlen) nodigt multidisciplinaire beeldend kunstenaars en artistiek onderzoekers uit Nederland, België en Duitsland uit om te reageren op een 3 maanden durende residentie (1 september – 31 november 2026) binnen het programma Borderland Residencies.
Het programma ondersteunt onderzoeksgerichte en procesmatige praktijken die zich verhouden tot ruimte, tijd en omgeving. Vertrekkend vanuit Robert Smithsons Heerlen Soil and Mirrors (1969) en de erfenis van Op Losse Schroeven: Situaties en Cryptostructuren, worden kunstenaars uitgenodigd om de publieke en tentoonstellingsruimte te benaderen als plekken voor onderzoek, observatie en interventie.
Hoewel deze historische referenties een belangrijk vertrekpunt vormen voor de residentie, hoeven voorstellen zich niet rechtstreeks te richten op Smithsons werk of op de tentoonstelling zelf. De residentie wil vooral ruimte bieden aan de denkwijzen, artistieke strategieën en intenties die aan deze geschiedenissen ten grondslag liggen, om van daaruit nieuwe artistieke vragen, onderzoeken en vormen van verbeelding te ontwikkelen.
Wij verwelkomen voorstellen die werken met onder meer mapping, wandelen, protocollen, tekst, geluid, installatie, performance of publicatie—met bijzondere aandacht voor praktijken die verborgen structuren, systemen en hedendaagse condities onderzoeken.
Het is nu de vraag niet langer óf kunst kan functioneren via proces, instructie, onderzoek of interventie – deze werkwijzen zijn inmiddels ingeburgerd binnen de hedendaagse kunstpraktijk. De residentie stelt daarom een andere vraag: welke verborgen structuren, maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen, ecologische veranderingen of technologische systemen vragen om nieuwe vormen van observatie, reflectie en interventie? En hoe kan artistiek onderzoek bijdragen aan het zichtbaar maken en verbeelden van deze realiteiten?
De residentie biedt:
- 3 maanden werkperiode (sep–nov 2026)
- €1000 per maand + €500 productiebudget
- Atelier-/woonruimte in Heerlen
- Deelname aan Borderland Residencies (field trips, studio visits, bijeenkomsten)
- Eindpresentatie tijdens open studio’s
