Krista Burger was in het najaar van 2025 artist-in-residence bij Greylight Projects in Heerlen. De resultaten van deze werkperiode toont zij in de tentoonstelling ‘contribution comes in many forms’. In deze afsluitende presentatie bij Greylight Projects, de afsluiting van een productieve residentie periode, is contribution zowel methode als betekenis.
Het is de daad van intiem verzamelen, van nieuwe vormen geven aan wat vaak wordt verwaarloosd of afgedankt, steeds opnieuw. Het woord contribution stamt af van het Latijnse contribuere – samenbrengen, je deel toevoegen. In de praktijk van Krista Burger neemt dit idee een tastbare, bijna letterlijke vorm aan. Ze werkt met wat voorhanden is: afgedankte materialen, (semi)publieke ruimtes en het onuitgesproken potentieel van het alledaagse.
Haar praktijk draait niet alleen om toevoegen, maar ook om herkennen wat er al is, wat anderen misschien over het hoofd zien, en het op nieuwe manieren laten spreken. Dit neemt vaak gestalte aan in omgevingen die als onesthetisch worden beschouwd: vlaggenmasten zonder functie, verlaten industrieterreinen, plekken die als leeg of onbenut worden bestempeld. Hier brengen haar kleurrijke werken, door als een soort marker te fungeren, vernieuwd aandacht voor wat er al is. Het wordt een speelse manier om dingen niet voor zoete koek te slikken, maar om ze te bevragen, of soms juist spanning te benadrukken.
Burgers proces is van nature collaboratief, of het nu gaat om de stille uitwisseling van materialen, de spontane inbreng van voorbijgangers of de collectieve energie van een workshop. In deze balans tussen co-creatie, spontaniteit en auteurschap stelt ze een eenvoudige, maar fundamenteel artistieke vraag: hoe kun je je positie niet opleggen maar dingen juist laten ontstaan uit een dialoog, terwijl je toch individuele stemmen herkent en koestert?

In this final presentation at Greylight Project, which concludes a productive residency period, contribution is both method and meaning. It is the act of intimate gathering, of giving new shapes to what is often neglected or discarded, again and again.
The word contribution traces back to the Latin contribuere—to bring together, to add one’s part. In Krista Burger’s practice, this idea takes on a tangible, almost literal form. She works with what is at hand: discarded materials, (semi)public spaces, and the unspoken potential of the everyday. Her practice is not just about adding, but about recognizing what is already there, what others might overlook and letting it speak anew.
This often takes shape in environments that might be considered unaesthetic: flagpoles without function, abandoned industrial areas, spaces that are designated as empty or unused. It is here that her colourful works, by highlighting almost like a marker, bring renewed attention to what is already there. It becomes playful way to not take something at face-value, but to question, or sometimes to emphasize tension.
Burger’s process is inherently collaborative, whether through the quiet exchange of materials, the spontaneous input of passersby, or the collective energy of a workshop. In this balancing act between co-creation, spontaneity and authorship, she raises a simple, but fundamentally artistic question: how not to impose and let things emerge from a dialogue, while still recognizing and
fostering an individual voice?
