Voor het DISPLAY programma van 2020 nodigt Greylight Projects curatoren uit die werkzaam zijn in de Euregio. Zij selecteren een werk uit de collectie of het recente tentoonstellings programma. Voor deze editie hebben we Frank-Thorsten Moll uitgenodigd, directeur van het hedendaagse kunstmuseum IKOB in Eupen. Hij selecteerde het werk ‘Ein auf seinen Grundriss reduzierter Stein im Maßstab 1 : 1 ‘ van Nora Mertes. Dit werk maakte deel uit van de tentoonstelling ‘A Critical Inventory of the IKOB Collection’ die in 2019 in het IKOB te zien was.

“Met het slijpen van het gesteente tot een dun, minimaal oppervlak is de steen als medium aanwezig; maar het oppervlak wijst samen met de titel naar een grafische, planimetrische voorstelling. Is het steenoppervlak dus een verwijzing naar het gesteente, dat oorspronkelijk de vorm van een berg had – met andere woorden: een teken? Kan een teken uit hetzelfde materiaal bestaan als het origineel waarnaar het wijst? Of gaat het hier om een nieuw origineel, een vlak gesteente dat naar niets anders dan naar zichzelf verwijst? “Deze tentoonstelling (A Critical Inventory of the IKOB Collection) is opgevat als een uitnodiging tot communicatie: vooral tussen het IKOB en de vrouwelijke kunstenaars die in de collectie vertegenwoordigd zijn, maar ook onder de bezoekers, zowel vrouwen als mannen, die veel van deze kunstwerken lange tijd niet of misschien wel nooit gezien hebben. For the DISPLAY program in 2020 Greylight Projects invites curators working in the Euregion for a proposal out of their museum collection or recent program. For this edition we invited Frank-Thorsten Moll, director of the contemporary art museum IKOB in Eupen. . He selected the work ‘Ein auf seinen Grundriss reduzierter Stein im Maßstab 1 : 1 ‘ by Nora Mertes. “With the grinding of the rock down to a thin, minimal surface, the rock is present as a medium; but the surface, together with the title, points towards a graphic, planimetrical representation. Is the stone surface accordingly a reference to the rock, which was originally shaped like a mountain – in other words, a sign? Can a sign consist of the same material as the original towards which it points? Or is it a matter here of a new original, a flat rock which refers to nothing other than itself?”  (Nora Mertes, 2013)
