Greylight Projects presenteert de solo tentoonstelling A Defense van Emile Hermans. Begin 2021, tijdens een sars-cov-2 lockdown, was de kunstenaar twee maanden onze gast en de huidige tentoonstelling is het resultaat van zijn verblijf bij ons.

A Defense is Emile Hermans´ weerslag van de pandemie en hoe wij ons leven hebben aangepast aan de mondiaal geïmplementeerde restricties: lockdowns, mondneusmaskers, sociale afstand bewaren, etc. De kunstenaar schrijft: ¨Ik werd gedwongen isolatie te heroverwegen, inclusief de effecten daarvan op geest en gemoed.¨

De kunstenaar is gefascineerd door forten. Fortificaties hadden, ooit, de functie om eigendom te beschermen. De kunstenaar is niet zo zeer gefascineerd door die historische kwaliteit maar door de geometrie van een vestingwerk. De esthetische kwaliteit leeft voort – vooral bezien vanuit vogelperspectief, ver van de herrie op de grond – ondanks de ravages van de tijd. De ooit machtige forten zijn verworden tot ruïnes. De overblijfselen van die bastions zijn nu gegrond in de stedelijke textuur (zie bijvoorbeeld Maastricht).

Kunnen we de abstracte geometrie van forten op een esthetische wijze ervaren nu de oorspronkelijke functie verloren ligt in een ver verleden? Tevens, kan abstracte geometrie – geidealiseerd als symmetrie en harmonie – troost bieden in tijden van sociale isolatie en schending van lichamelijke integriteit?

Emile Hermans (1988; www.emilehermans.com) woont en werkt in Maastricht. Hij heeft een BFA van de Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht (2015) en een MFA van LUCA School of Arts Brussels (2017). Hij is lid van de collectieven Nowhere Collective en Center for Artistic Sensibilities.

Greylight Projects is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Emile Hermans titled A Defense. Early 2021, during a sars-cov-2 lockdown, the artist conducted a two-month residency at Greylight Projects and the results of this residency forms the exhibition A Defense.

A Defense is Emile Hermans´ response to the pandemic and how we had to adapt to the world-wide implemented restrictions: lockdowns, face masks, social distancing, etc. The artist says: ¨It made me rethink isolation and its impact on the mind – something I have always been interested in and somehow idealized.¨

The artist has a fascination for bastioned fortifications; beyond their once – assumed – power to protect, their geometry has an aesthetic quality that still endures – especially seen from above, away from the hustle bustle on the ground – despite the ravages of time. These once mighty forts have turned into ruins, remnants have become buried deep into the fabric of a 21st century settlement (Maastricht, for example).

Can we have an aesthetic experience of what’s left of these forts – their abstract geometry – now their original function has been lost to a past? Moreover, can an aesthetic experience of abstract geometry – idealized as symmetry and harmony – offer consolation in times of social isolation and the violation of bodily integrity?
