Een vraag die in de hedendaagse kunstpraktijk een rol speelt is wat doe je met het materiaal van een (tijdelijke) installatie als de expositie is afgelopen. Of het materiaal dat overblijft van experimenten in het atelier van de kunstenaar. Dit is een van de vragen die Christian Landspersky stelt met het project What Remains Gallery.
Voor Greylight Projects is het een terugkerend onderwerp als werkplaats en expositieruimte voor hedendaagse kunst. Wat blijft er over nadat een kunstenaar te gast is geweest in onze ateliers in Heerlen. Is dit een materiële ingreep of zijn het blijvende ideeën die resoneren in de geesten van de bezoekers en deelnemers?
What Remains Gallery:
What remains / Wat blijft over? Sinds de oprichting in 2009 draait de What Remains Gallery rond deze vraag. In plaats van iets nieuws te produceren, ligt de focus van de artistieke praktijk op het onderzoeken van het reeds bestaande. Wat blijft er over van het werk van een kunstenaar, een artistiek werk en haar idee nadat het is tentoongesteld? What Remains Gallery gaat van start bij dit einde, om een nieuw begin te ontdekken in het artistieke potentieel.
Om de aandacht te vestigen op het oorspronkelijke materiaal, dat door het hedendaagse kunst systeem, na gebruik – als vervangbaar, tijdelijk en reproduceerbaar – wordt afgevoerd. In een zowel mentaal als fysiek spanningsveld benadert What Remains Gallery het vergeten en uitgeslotene en tegelijkertijd het aanwezige en bestaande. What Remains Gallery is niet zozeer het idee van een kunstgalerie als eerder een mentale ruimte voor transformaties die verkend dient te worden.

A question that plays a role in contemporary art practice is what to do with the material of a (temporary) installation when the exhibition is over. Or the material left over from experiments in the artist’s studio. This is one of the questions raised by the What Remains Gallery.
For Greylight Projects, it is a recurring topic as a workshop and exhibition space for contemporary art. What remains after an artist has been a guest in our studios in Heerlen. Is this a material intervention or are it lasting ideas that resonate in the minds of visitors and participants?

What remains / What is left? Since its inception in 2009, the What Remains Gallery has revolved around this question. Instead of producing something new, the focus of the artistic practice is on exploring what already exists.
