Borderland Residencies is een Euregionaal netwerk van kunstinstellingen. Het is een gezamenlijk initiatief van kunstenaar recidencies in het Nederlands-Duitse grensgebied van de regio Nederrijn en Limburg. De ligging in de periferie is een kracht: de beschikbare woon- en werkruimte t.o.v. respectievelijk het Ruhrgebied en de Randstad, de hands-on mentaliteit die beide regio’s van oudsher kenmerken, en de hoeveelheid kunstinitiatieven en werkplaatsen bieden een voedingsbodem voor artistieke ontwikkeling en reflectie.

Acht organisaties in deze regio committeren zich aan het initiatief. Respectievelijk Kunstmuseum Bochum, Schloss Ringenberg Hamminkeln, Kulturforum Alte Post Neuss, Kunstgenerator Vierssen, Odapark Venray, Van Bommel Van Dam Venlo, Greylight Projects Heerlen en Internationales Atelierstipendium Mönchengladbach.

Vanuit Nederland nemen Greylight Project in Heerlen en Odapark in Venray deel aan dit programma. Het Borderland programma versterkt de bestaande werkzaamheden van de leden door meerdaagse field trips voor kunstenaars van alle aangesloten residencies, uit ontmoetingen met curatoren en instellingen uit de regio en uit een programma met publieksmomenten, zoals lezingen, presentaties en workshops. Voor de deelnemende kunstenaars biedt het programma kans op het maken van contacten aan beide zijden van de grens, zowel met collega’s als met instellingen. Daarnaast focussen de field trips ook op grotere thema’s die zich in de regio manifesteren zoals energiewinning, landbouwtransitie en vergrijzing.

Greylight Projects in Heerlen en Odapark bieden binnen het grensoverschrijdende samenwerkingsverband Borderland Residencies twee plekken aan voor kunstenaars uit Nederland om hun praktijk en netwerk uit te diepen. De twee kunstenaars worden uitgenodigd om te reageren op de directe omgeving Limburg en Euregio. Beide residencies hebben een eigen focus binnen de bredere context van de Borderland residency. De residency periode wordt op beide locaties afgesloten met een open studio in het laatste weekend.

Visual artists, curators, art critics and art observers who wish to deepen their professional practices and expand their networks are eligible to apply for a working period in the Netherlandsor another country at one of the recognized residencies offered by the Mondriaan Fund.

Borderland Residencies is a Euregional network of art institutions. This joint initiative involves artist residencies in the Dutch-German border area of the Lower Rhine region and the Province of Limburg. The location on the periphery is one of the organisation’s strengths: the available living and working space (in contrast with the Ruhr Area and the Randstad), the hands-on mentality that traditionally characterises both regions and the many art initiatives and workshops offer fertile ground for artistic development and reflection.

Eight organisations in the region are involved with the initiative: Kunstmuseum Bochum, Schloss Ringenberg in Hamminkeln, Kulturforum Alte Post in Neuss, Kunstgenerator in Vierssen, Odapark in Venray, Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo, Greylight Projects in Heerlen and the Internationales Atelierstipendium Mönchengladbach.

The Dutch participants in this programme are Greylight Projects in Heerlen and Odapark in Venray. The Borderland programme supports the members’ activities by organising multi-day field trips for artists from all of the participating residencies, through meetings with curators and institutions from the region and with a public programme including lectures, presentations and workshops. The programme offers participating artists the opportunity to forge contacts on both sides of the border, with both fellow artists and institutions. The field trips also focus on broader themes in the region, such as energy production, agricultural transition and the aging population.

Within the cross-border collaboration Borderland Residencies, Greylight Projects in Heerlen and Odapark in Venray offer two residencies to enable artists from the Netherlands to broaden their practice and network. The two artists are invited to respond to the immediate surroundings in Limburg and the Euregio. Both residencies have their own focus within the broader context of the Borderland residency. At both locations, the residency period is concluded with an open studio in the final weekend.
