Kunstenaars Ali Glover en Carole Louis hebben afgelopen drie maanden bij Greylight Projects in Heerlen onderzoek gedaan en nieuw werk gemaakt dat onderdeel zal worden van het Performing Landscapes festival dat dit jaar in Luik plaatsvindt. Tijdens hun werkperiode hebben ze de regio verkend en hun bevindingen gebruikt voor hun nieuwe werken. 

Vrijdag 12 en zaterdag 13 juli stellen ze hun ateliers open en kan je een ‘sneak preview’ krijgen van deze nieuwe werken in wording. Op de vrijdag zijn er verschillende presentaties van o.a. de gastkunstenaars en ook een Talk&Walk door Floor Snels. Snels werk is onderdeel van de expositie ‘How does that relate to this and that and there?’ Zaterdag zijn de kunstenaars aanwezig om mee in gesprek te gaan om te vertellen over hun werk.

over de kunstenaars:

Ali Glover heeft tijdens zijn verblijf met een fenomenologische benadering de stad en de regio verkend, omdat hij erachter wil komen hoe de omgeving voelt via persoonlijke interacties, en wil ontdekken wat er voor onderliggend speelt door te luisteren naar ervaringen en anekdotes.

Glover is in zijn werk geïnteresseerd in ideeën over stedelijke planning en geopolitiek die doorsijpelen in het alledaagse onderbewustzijn. Hij zoekt naar plekken in de omgeving die door werkzaamheden zijn opengebroken of waar werkzaamheden plaatsvinden voor aanpassingen of onderhoud. 

Deze informatie die hij hier aantreft articuleert hij door de gevonden beelden, geluiden en onderliggende ritmes die hij vervolgens op zijn eigen manier gebruikt en bewerkt. Van daaruit is hij begonnen met het onderzoeken van geluiden en handelingen die zichzelf binnen de regio associëren, waarvan het begrip marcherende bands (de harmonie) er één lijkt te zijn. Een beeld wat resoneert met een voortdenderende vooruitgangs transitie. Hij bestudeert de politieke processen hieromtrent en typt de audio-opnamen uit, die hij vervolgens in verschillende versies opnieuw uitwerkt. Op deze manier probeert hij de orde der dingen te herschikken en te doorgronden.

Tijdens de open studio’s zal er een geluidscompositie te horen zijn in zijn atelier, een momentopname van zijn onderzoek en een inzicht, midden in het proces van het maken, van het finale geluidswerk dat in Luik op een zeer markante locatie te horen zal zijn. 

Carole Louis ontdekte tijdens haar residentie in Heerlen de carnavalstraditie, waarvan de ‘Blauwe Sjuut’ een markant onderdeel van is. Omdat het Performing Landscapes festival in Luik, gedeeltelijk plaatsvindt op een boot was ze geraakt door deze schuit op het droge, de Blauwe Sjuut kwam ze op het idee van haar eigen boot op het droge, een ‘fietsboot’. Tijdens haar regelmatige bezoeken aan de vele kringloopwinkels in Heerlen vielen de vele vlaggen en de alomtegenwoordige oranje kleur haar telkens op. Dit bracht Louis tot het verdere uitwerken van haar “Superhere” personage dat met zijn ‘vlaggen mantel’ wappert, zo trots op zijn lokale loyaliteit dat het haast clownesk wordt. Op deze manier vermengt ze verschillende lokale, nationale en traditionele carnavals referenties.

Carnaval wordt traditioneel verondersteld te functioneren als een omkering van de macht. De burgers krijgen de sleutel van de stad van de ‘notabelen’. Reflecties op zulke omkeringen van hiërarchieën, waardesystemen en hun representaties lopen als een rode draad door haar werk. Aan de andere kant schrijft ze in de rol van toeristische gids op deze boot in Luik een dystopisch betoog, waarin onder andere projectontwikkelaars erin geslaagd zijn om de openbare ruimte volledig te privatiseren. Tijdens de residentie heeft ze tevens het boek “Andy Kaufman, wrestling with the american dream” van Florian Keller bestudeerd, waarin radicale letterlijkheid wordt geanalyseerd waardoor Carole haar aanpak beter kon begrijpen.

Tijdens de opening van Louis’ studio worden de verzamelingen objecten getoond die ze heeft verzameld en kun je zien hoe haar werk is opgebouwd door deze verschillende elementen zo te rangschikken dat ze als vele puzzelstukjes een beeld geven van een groter geheel.

[EN] Artists Ali Glover and Carole Louis have spent the past three months at Greylight Projects in Heerlen researching and creating new work that will be part of this year’s Performing Landscapes festival in Liège. During their working period, they explored the region and used their findings for their new works.

On Friday 12 and Saturday 13 July, they will open their studios and you can get a ‘sneak preview’ of these new works in the making. On Friday, there are several presentations by the resident artists, among others, and a Talk&Walk by Floor Snels. Snels’ work is part of the exhibition ‘How does that relate to this and that and there?‘ On Saturday, the artists will be present to talk about their work.

about the artists:

Ali Glover has used a phenomenological approach to explore the city and region during his stay, wanting to find out how the environment feels through personal interactions, and to discover what is going on underneath by listening to experiences and anecdotes.

In his work, Glover is interested in ideas about urban planning and geopolitics that seep into the everyday subconscious. He looks for places in the environment that have been opened up by works or where work is taking place for modifications or maintenance.

He articulates this information he finds here through the found images, sounds and underlying rhythms that he then uses and edits in his own way. From there, he has begun to explore sounds and actions that associate themselves within the region, of which the notion of marching bands (the harmony) seems to be one. An image that resonates with a proceeding progress transition. He studies the political processes surrounding this and types out the audio recordings, which he then reworks in different versions. In this way, he tries to rearrange and make sense of the order of things.

During the open studios, a sound composition will be heard in his studio, a snapshot of his research and an insight, in the middle of the process of making, of the final sound work that will be heard in Liège in a very striking location.

During her residency in Heerlen, Carole Louis discovered the local carnival tradition, of which the carnival wagon named the ‘Blauw Sjuut’ is a striking part. As the Performing Landscapes festival in Liege will partly takes place on a boat she was touched by this ‘barge on dry land’, the ‘Blauw Sjuut’ she came up with the idea of her own boat on dry land, a ‘bicycle boat’. While regularly visiting the many thrift shops in Heerlen, the flags and the ubiquitous orange colour caught her eye every time. This led Louis to develop her “SuperHere” character going around while waving his ‘flag coat’, so proud of his local allegiance that it becomes clownish. In this way, she mixes various local, national and traditional carnival references.

Carnival is traditionally believed to function as a reversal of power. Citizens are given the keys to the city by the ‘notables’. Reflections on hierarchies, value systems and their representations run like a thread through her work. 

Parallel to this she will get in the role of tourist guide on this boat in Liege, she writes a dystopian “Büttenrede” speech in which, among other things, property developers have managed to completely privatise public space. During the residency, she also studied “Andy Kaufman, wrestling with the american dream” by Florian Keller, which analyses radical  literality, allowing Carole to better understand her approach.

During the opening of Louis’s studio, the collections of objects she has collected are shown and you can see how her work is constructed by arranging these different elements in a way so that they can give a picture of a bigger picture like puzzle pieces.
