Op 31 mei om 17:00 opent Greylight Projects in samenwerking met Floor Snels en Fenna Koot de nieuwe expositie “How does that relate to this and that and there?”.

Kunstenaars Floor Snels en Fenna Koot bieden inzichten op welke hiërarchieën er bestaan in onze directe omgeving. Door de geschiedenis heen zijn we onszelf als mensen steeds meer als maker of eigenaar van de wereld gaan zien. Echter, in een tijd van grote, overlappende crisissen en transities is het nodig meer grip te krijgen op hoe we bestaande hiërarchieën kunnen herstructureren. De werken die onderdeel zijn van deze expositie dagen je uit om een hegemonische hiërarchie met de omgeving af te breken en op gelijke voet te gaan staan. Maken wij de wereld of maakt de wereld ons? Of maken we samen?

In de expositie How does that relate to this and that and there? Laten Snels en Koot zien dat alles in de omgeving invloed heeft op elkaar. Dat doen zij door onder andere het blootleggen van onze relatie met niet-menselijke entiteiten en gebouwen. Deze sociale en architectonische structuren waar we dagelijks mee van doen hebben, blijken daardoor eerder fragiel dan solide. Als toeschouwer kunnen we ons daardoor afvragen waar onze opvattingen, evenals onze positie daarin, op gebaseerd zijn. Kunnen we op een andere manier leren kijken naar de structuren en relaties waar we ons toe verhouden? En is het mogelijk ze daardoor ook te herstructureren? 

Koot en Snels werken bij Greylight Projects aan een hernieuwde presentatie van hun werken About Building (Fenna Koot, 2020) en Amphi, Noctua & Vespula (Floor Snels & Noor Boiten, 2023). 

Fenna Koot (Breda) haar werk bestaat uit installaties en sculpturen die een poging doen om hernieuwde aandacht te geven aan datgene wat vaak als vanzelfsprekend wordt beschouwd. Juist deze vanzelfsprekende elementen spelen volgens Koot een cruciale rol in de manier waarop we de wereld vormen en begrijpen. Bij Greylight Projects werkt zij verder op haar serie About Building (2020). Deze modulaire glazen installatie bestaande uit honderden bouwelementen refereert aan de Plattenbau, een uiterst systematische bouwmethode met zijn oorsprong in het naoorlogse vernietigde Duitsland. De politieke ideologie achter deze efficiënte bouwwijze was het op korte termijn ontplooien van een socialistisch ideale staat. ‘Ik vind het intrigerend en confronterend tegelijkertijd dat er middels een structuur een omgeving opgelegd wordt waar verschillende levens in gelijksoortige hokjes naast/onder/boven elkaar dienen te functioneren’. Nauw in relatie tot About Building werkt Koot momenteel aan een nieuwe installatie, genaamd Number of Hammers. Opnieuw speelt zij hierin met het harde contrast van iets dat een robuuste en georganiseerde uitstraling heeft, terwijl het werk zich daadwerkelijk in een fragiele toestand begeeft. 

Floor Snels (Rotterdam) onderzoekt verschillende perspectieven op rechtvaardigheid en richt zich op het openen van onze morele cirkel. In haar werk brengt ze het individuele en het collectieve samen, waarbij ze lokale vraagstukken verbindt met meer universele thema’s. Bij Greylight Projects presenteert zij het werk Amphi, Noctua & Vespula (2023), een 3-channel video-installatie voortgekomen uit een samenwerking Noor Boiten. De installatie toont macro-photogrammetry scans van overleden insecten die tijdens een werkperiode in de galerieruimte zijn gevonden. Met koptelefoon te beluisteren is een dialoog tussen drie insecten – Amphi (Amphimallon Solstitiale), Noctua (Noctua Pronuba) en Vespula (Vespula Vulgaris). De toeschouwer wordt uitgenodigd om oog in oog te staan met levensgrote modellen van deze insecten terwijl ze luisteren naar het gesprek dat tussen de insecten plaatsvindt. Hierin komen verschillende perspectieven op de verhouden tussen de mens en niet-menselijke entiteiten aan bod, die aanzetten tot denken over de mens hun rol in de aanhoudende massale uitstervingscrisis. Snels en Boiten pogen daarmee empathie voor insecten en andere niet menselijke entiteiten te bevorderen, geïnspireerd door Cora Diamond’s ideeën over de erkenning van de belangen van niet-menselijke entiteiten en het toekennen van een zekere mate van persoonlijkheid aan hen.

On 31 May, Greylight Projects will open the new exhibition ‘How does that relate to this and that and there?’ in collaboration with Floor Snels and Fenna Koot. Artists Floor Snels and Fenna Koot offer insights on what hierarchies exist in our immediate environment. Throughout history, we as humans have increasingly come to see ourselves as makers or owners of the world. However, in a time of major, overlapping crises and transitions, there is a need to get a better grip on how we can restructure existing hierarchies. The works that are part of this exhibition challenge you to break down a hegemonic hierarchy with the environment and get on an equal footing. Do we make the world or does the world make us? Or do we make it together?

In the exhibition How does that relate to this and that and there? Snels and Koot show that everything in the environment affects each other. They do so by, among other things, exposing our relationship with non-human entities and buildings. As a result, these social and architectural structures we deal with every day turn out to be fragile rather than solid. As observers, this allows us to wonder what our views, as well as our position within them, are based on. Can we learn to look differently at the structures and relationships we relate to? And is it possible to restructure them as a result?

Koot and Snels are working at Greylight Projects on a renewed presentation of their works About Building (Fenna Koot, 2020) and Amphi, Noctua & Vespula (Floor Snels & Noor Boiten, 2023).

Fenna Koot (Breda) her work consists of installations and sculptures that attempt to give renewed attention to what is often taken for granted. According to Koot, it is precisely these self-evident elements that play a crucial role in the way we form and understand the world. At Greylight Projects, she continues working on her series About Building (2020). This modular glass installation consisting of hundreds of building elements refers to the Plattenbau, a highly systematic building method with its origins in post-war destroyed Germany. The political ideology behind this efficient building method was the short-term deployment of a socialist ideal state. ‘I find it intriguing and confrontational at the same time that through a structure an environment is imposed where different lives in similar cubicles have to function next to/below/above each other’. Closely related to About Building, Koot is currently working on a new installation called Number of Hammers. In it, she again plays with the harsh contrast of something having a robust and organised appearance, while the work is actually in a fragile state.

Floor Snels (Rotterdam) explores different perspectives on justice and focuses on opening our moral circle. In her work, she brings together the individual and the collective, connecting local issues with more universal themes. At Greylight Projects, she presents the work Amphi, Noctua & Vespula (2023), a 3-channel video installation born out of a collaboration Noor Boiten. The installation shows macro-photogrammetry scans of deceased insects found in the gallery space during a work period. To be heard with headphones is a dialogue between three insects – Amphi (Amphimallon Solstitiale), Noctua (Noctua Pronuba) and Vespula (Vespula Vulgaris). The viewer is invited to come face to face with life-size models of these insects while listening to the conversation taking place between them. In it, different perspectives on the relationships between humans and non-human entities are discussed, prompting thinking about humans’ role in the ongoing mass extinction crisis. Snels and Boiten thereby seek to promote empathy for insects and other non-human entities, inspired by Cora Diamond’s ideas on recognizing

the interests of non-human entities and attributing a certain degree of personality to them.
