(NL) Voor de productie van talloze producten die we in het dagelijks leven gebruiken, worden landschappen afgegraven voor de nodige grondstoffen. Bijvoorbeeld in Heerlen is er een groeve waar zilverzand wordt gewonnen. Dit soort uitgravingen die soms jarenlang en kilometers breed en/of diep plaatsvinden, zorgen ervoor dat het landschap op drastische wijze in beweging is. In reactie op de vraag “Where are we now?” is Luuk Smits ingedoken op dit soort veranderende landschappen. Hij is in en rondom de groeve in Heerlen op pad gegaan om de geschiedenis en toekomst van de plek te verkennen, waarbij verschillende kenmerken en verhalen zijn aandacht trokken. 

Het desastreuze beeld dat de afgraving veroorzaakt, staat in scherp contrast met de voordelige gevolgen van bijvoorbeeld het meer dat er ontstaat, zoals voor het plaatselijke ecosysteem en recreatieve doeleinden. Het werk in de expositie As long as it lasts van Smits richt zich op de complexiteit van de verschillende gevolgen van zo’n afgraving. Zonder een uitspraak te doen over wat goed of slecht is, probeert Smits via zijn werk op een beeldende manier op te merken wat er gebeurd en hiermee ook vragen op te wekken. Zo zijn in de expositieruimte van Greylight Projects bijvoorbeeld het vlot ‘ZAND’ en het vlot ‘WEG’ ter plekke opgebouwd.

Want, waar gaan ze heen? Refereren ze aan een apocalyptisch toekomstbeeld zoals in verhalen als De Ark Van Noach? Of geven ze juist een idee over het nut van een plaatselijk meer? Of is het vooral een oproep om nieuwsgierig te zijn naar de herkomst van alledaagse producten? Volgen we via Smits zijn expositie de weg van het zand, of is het zand al weg?

Luuk Smits is beeldend kunstenaar en fotograaf, woonachtig in Rotterdam. Met een algemene interesse in stedelijk en niet-stedelijk bouwmateriaal, werkt Smits voornamelijk in fotografie, installatie en video.

(ENG) For the production of numerous products that we use in everyday life, landscapes are excavated for the necessary raw materials. For example, in Heerlen there is a quarry where silver sand is extracted. This kind of excavation, which sometimes takes place for years and kilometers wide and/or deep, causes the landscape to change drastically. In response to the question “Where are we now?” Luuk Smits delved into this kind of changing landscape. He set out in and around the quarry in Heerlen to explore the history and future of the place, where several features and stories caught his attention. 

The disastrous image caused by the excavation is in sharp contrast to the beneficial effects of, for example, the lake it creates benefiting the local ecosystem and recreational purposes. The work in Smits’ exhibition As long as it lasts focuses on the complexity of the various consequences of such an excavation. Without making a statement about what is good or bad, Smits tries through his work to draw attention in a visual way to what is happening and in doing so also raises questions. In the exhibition space of Greylight Projects, for example, the raft ‘ZAND’ and the raft ‘WEG’ were built on the spot.

After all, where are they going? Do they refer to an apocalyptic vision of the future as in stories such as Noah’s Ark? Or, on the contrary, do they give an idea about the usefulness of a local lake? Or is it mainly a call to be curious about the origins of everyday products? Through Smits’ exhibition, are we following the path of the sand, or is the sand already gone?
