In de komende periode initieert Krista Jantowski, als resident bij Greylight Projects, de ‘reading room’. De reading room heeft zowel een online als een offline bestaan. Online is de reading room te vinden op de website van Greylight Projects. Offline is de reading room open voor (geplande) bezoeken, waarvoor je contact kan opnemen met Krista Jantowski (krista@greylightprojects.org).

(NL) De reading room omvat een groeiende verzameling teksten, gesprekken en bijeenkomsten die het mijnverleden van de regio Heerlen (NL) traceren. Uitgaande van de vraag: hoe wordt het verhaal verteld als het voorbij is?, is de reading room een openbaar onderzoek om historische verhalen, collectief geheugen en cultureel erfgoed te bevragen en om verhalen naar voren te brengen die buiten beschouwing zijn gebleven.    

Je kunt de reading room online volgen, hier publiceren we regelmatig een selectie van teksten, archiefmateriaal, referenties of andere documentatie. Je bent ook welkom om een bezoek te plannen aan de fysieke ruimte die de reading room is, gehost door Greylight Projects (Heerlen), waar je welkom bent om te lezen, kletsen, thee te drinken en rond te hangen.

De reading room is een initiatief van Krista Jantowski, met steun van Greylight Projects. Het vangt aan bij een interesse om te onderzoeken hoe verhalen over het mijnverleden een rol spelen in de identiteitsvorming van lokale gemeenschappen, hoe macht de verhalen die we vertellen structureert en andere verhalen ongemoeid laat, en hoe continuïteit wordt gecreëerd. Naast een verzameling onderzoeken wordt de leeszaal geanimeerd door live gesprekken, radio-uitzendingen en collectieve lezingen. In een collectieve poging om de relatie tot macht in dominante vormen van verhalen vertellen te bevragen, wil de reading room met verschillende bijdragers onderhandelen over hoe en wat deel gaat uitmaken van de collectie. Gestart in september 2023, als onderdeel van het Borderlands residentieprogramma, hopen we de reading room uit te breiden tot een langlopend onderzoekstraject, verbonden met verschillende (artistieke) beoefenaars, leden van de gemeenschap en partners.

(EN) The reading room holds a growing collection of texts, conversations, and gatherings that trace the mining past of the region of Heerlen (NL) through its afterlives. Departing from the question: how is the story told after it’s over? the reading room is a public research effort to question historical narratives, collective memory, and cultural heritage and to bring forward stories that have been left unattended.   

You can follow the reading room online, as we regularly publish a selection of texts, archival material, references, or other documentation. You are also welcome to plan a visit to the physical space that is the reading room, generously hosted by Greylight Projects (Heerlen) where you are welcome to read, chat, have a tea and hang out. 

The reading room is initiated by Krista Jantowski, with support from Greylight Projects. Starting from an interest to research the way stories about a mining past play a role in the identity formation of local communities, the reading room investigates how power structures the stories we tell while leaving other stories unattended, questioning how continuity is created. Next to a collection of research, the reading room is animated by live conversations, radio broadcasts, and collective readings. In a collective effort to question the relation to power in dominant forms of storytelling, the reading room aims to negotiate with different contributors how and what becomes part of its collection. Initiated in September 2023, as part of the Borderlands residency program, we hope to expand the reading room into a long-term research trajectory, connected to different (artistic) practitioners, community members and collaborators.
