Het begon allemaal in de Zwitserse Alpen bij de Furka Pass op een hoogte van 2.429 meter, niet ver van de Rhônegletsjer, op 24 juni 1983 om 12 uur ‘s middags met het optreden van James Lee Byars: “a drop of black perfume”. Vanaf de volgende zomer en tot in 1996 nodigde Marc Hostettler (uitgever, galerist in Neuchâtel en initiator van FurkArt) niet minder dan zestig kunstenaars in het oude hotel Furkablick uit 1893 op de Furka Pass, niet ver van de Rhônegletsjer. In de perioden dat de bergpas open is veranderde het hotel Furkablick en haar omgeving in een artistiek laboratorium, een plaats waar duurzame en efemere kunstwerken ontstonden. 

Naast Panamarenko, die in het bijgebouw trok en er zijn eerste ‘vliegrugzakken’ en archeopteryxen realiseerde waren er o.m. ook werken, ingrepen en performances te zien van Rem Koolhaas, Jenny Holzer, Ulay, Guillaume Bijl, Richard Long, Stanley Brouwn, Filip Francis, Mario Merz, Günther Förg, Per Kirkeby, Claude Rutault, Ian Hamilton-Finlay, Lawrence Weiner, Gretchen Faust en vele andere nu internationaal gereputeerde kunstenaars. 

De expositie ‘Furkart ephemera’ toont oorspronkelijke documenten (uitnodigingen, affiches, prentbriefkaarten, briefwisseling) met betrekking tot de artistieke ingrepen die er in die periode uitgevoerd werden. Deze documenten, veelal uitgegeven door Hostettler werden bijeengebracht door Thomas Rodriguez. Het ensemble werd chronologisch gebracht en aangevuld met gefilmde en geschreven getuigenissen van kunstenaars en protagonisten – onder meer Ulay, Guillaume Bijl, Per Kirkeby, François Morellet, Hamish Fulton, John Armleder, Mark Luyten, Lawrence Weiner, Isi Fiszman, René Zäch, Ria Pacquée, Glen Baxter, Jacques Hainard, Luc Deleu, Roman Signer. 

De expositie geeft ons een beeld van de bijdragen van deze verschillende persoonlijkheden en maakt de menselijke dimensie van dit avontuur dat een diepe indruk naliet bij een hele generatie van de kunstwereld, zichtbaar.

De tentoonstelling Furkart ephemera startte in 2019 nadat Wouter Huis, directeur van Greylight Projects, Thomas Rodriguez uitnodigde om een fysieke tentoonstelling samen te stellen met stukken uit het archief en aangevuld met video-interviews met kunstenaars die reflecteren op de geschiedenis rond Hotel Furkablick. Rodriquez legde toen de laatste hand aan zijn omvangrijke publicatie Furkart ephemera*. De eerste tentoonstelling vond plaats in de Kapelzaal van Greylight Projects in Brussel. Daarna was de tentoonstelling o.a. te zien in het Muhka Museum in Antwerpen in augustus 2019 en in het Château d’Oiron in 2021.

* Het boek Furkart ephemera 1984-1996 van Thomas Rodriguez is uitgegeven door Captures Éditions. Het bundelt de verschillende documenten van de tentoonstelling. Het gaat vergezeld van teksten van Patricia Nussbaum en Paulo Pires do Vale. Het boek Furkart ephemera is tot stand gekomen met steun van de volgende partners uit de particuliere en openbare sector: Pro Helvetia, Canton du Valais, Jan Michalski, Alfred Richterich Stiftung / Institut Furkablick.

An exhibition compiled from the archives of the hotel Furkablick in the Swiss Alps. It all started in the Swiss Alps at the Furka Pass at an altitude of 2,429 meters, not far from the Rhone glacier, on 24 June 1983 at noon with the performance of James Lee Byars: “a drop of black perfume”. From the following summer and until 1996, Marc Hostettler (publisher, gallerist in Neuchâtel and initiator of FurkArt) invited no less than sixty artists to the old hotel Furkablick from 1893 on the Furka Pass, not far from the Rhone glacier. During the periods when the mountain pass was open, the hotel Furkablick and its surroundings turned into an artistic laboratory, a place where lasting and ephemeral works of art were created.

In addition to Panamarenko, who moved into the annex and created his first “flight backpacks” and archaeopteryxes there, the Furkablick has also hosted works, interventions and performances by Rem Koolhaas, Jenny Holzer, Ulay, Guillaume Bijl, Richard Long, Stanley Brouwn, Filip Francis, Mario Merz, Günther Förg, Per Kirkeby, Claude Rutault, Ian Hamilton-Finlay, Lawrence Weiner, Gretchen Faust and many other now internationally renowned artists.

The exhibition ‘Furkart ephemera’ shows original documents (invitations, posters, postcards, correspondence) relating to the artistic interventions carried out in that period. These documents, mostly published by Hostettler, were brought together by Thomas Rodriguez. The ensemble was brought together chronologically and completed with filmed and written testimonies of artists and protagonists – among others Ulay, Guillaume Bijl, Per Kirkeby, François Morellet, Hamish Fulton, John Armleder, Max Bill, Rémy Zaugg, Michel Ritter, Olivier Mosset, Mark Luyten, Lawrence Weiner, Isi Fiszman, René Zäch, Ria Pacquée, Glen Baxter, Jacques Hainard, Luc Deleu, Roman Signer.

The exhibition shows us the contributions of these different personalities and reveals the human dimension of this adventure that left a deep impression on a whole generation of the art world.

The exhibition Furkart ephemera started in 2019 after Wouter Huis, director of Greylight Projects, invited Thomas Rodriguez to compile a physical exhibition with pieces out of the archive and supplemented with video interviews with artists reflecting on the history around the Hotel Furkablick. Rodriquez then was finishing his comprehensive publication Furkart ephemera*. The first exhibition was held at the Chapel venue of Greylight Projects in Brussels. After this the exhibition is shown at Muhka Museum in Antwerp in august 2019 and in the Château d’Oiron in 2021.

* The book Furkart ephemera 1984-1996 by Thomas Rodriguez is published by Captures Éditions. It gathers the different documents of the exhibition.
