Who’s in charge of the dark?.

On Tuesday 29 September, we will host artists’ talks with our current artists-in-residence Maryna Shtanko, Bas Ketelaars and Elli Ott. They will talk about their work, their methods and their plans for their time in Heerlen.

_ Hunting in the Dark

This autumn, Greylight Projects’ programme unfolds around a theme that connects its different projects and practices: looking into the dark. Looking into the unknown, into what cannot be known directly or with certainty. Something that today seems increasingly difficult to allow for.

We look around us. Not only at what is visible and immediately at hand, but also at what remains hidden from view. We look down and up, at what lies beneath our feet and what takes place above us. We look back into the past and forward towards a future that has yet to reveal itself.

The present is not a fixed moment. It carries traces of what came before and already contains something of what is yet to come. Different times and perspectives overlap and exist alongside one another.

Together with the artists, we look at our surroundings and try to find our place in relation to them. At landscapes, materials, traces, memories, ecosystems and hidden structures. Sometimes by looking very closely, sometimes by taking a step back. Sometimes by looking at what is there, sometimes by searching for what has not yet become visible.

Looking into the dark means that not everything reveals itself immediately. It requires attention, imagination and the ability to find one’s bearings without knowing exactly where one will end up.

As the protagonist in Death in Venice says: “Sometimes I think that artists are rather like hunters aiming in the dark. They don’t know what their target is, and they don’t know if they’ve hit it.”

We look into the dark — at what lies above and below, at what has been, and at the uncertainty of what has been and what is yet to come.

_ Bas Ketelaars

During his residency, Ketelaars will bring this research more explicitly into the field through a project provisionally titled Who’s in charge of the dark?. The project approaches darkness not as the absence of light, but as an ecological quality: a shared space and habitat for nocturnal life.

_ Maryna Shtanko

During her residency at Greylight Projects, Maryna Shtanko will further develop her research into the ecological and symbolic significance of soil in Ukraine through fieldwork, photography and material experimentation. Her practice extends beyond the photographic image to include textiles and embroidery, video, sound, artists’ books and performative actions. Through these different media, she investigates how landscapes can be observed, mapped and translated, and how material processes can activate memories that are difficult to make visible.

_ Elli Ott

During her residency in Heerlen, Elli Ott will focus on limestone and the traces of an ancient sea contained within the landscape of South Limburg. The limestone beneath the region was formed around 80 million years ago, when the area was covered by a sea. The rock consists largely of the accumulated skeletons of microscopic marine organisms, alongside the fossilised remains of ammonites, sea urchins, corals and other forms of marine life.
